At Sanami Defense Academy, we believe the shotgun remains one of the most versatile and effective defensive tools available. Shotgun 1: Basics is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of safe, effective shotgun handling and static marksmanship.

This 8-hour course lays the foundation for responsible shotgun ownership—covering everything from basic function to first rounds fired.
Whether you're new to shotguns or looking to refine your skills, Shotgun 1 provides the critical knowledge you need to operate your weapon safely and confidently.

What You’ll Learn

  • Safe handling, loading, and unloading procedures

  • Understanding shotgun types, gauges, and ammunition selection

  • Choosing the right shotgun for your needs (home defense, sport, hunting)

  • Mounting, stance, sight picture, and recoil management fundamentals

  • Patterning at close and intermediate distances

  • Static target engagement with proper technique

  • Cleaning and basic maintenance essentials

No moving targets are used in this class. Students focus on safe, controlled fire on static targets.

Course Format

  • Total Duration: 8 Hours

  • Classroom Portion: 4 Hours (indoors or outdoors)

  • Range Portion: 4 Hours (outdoors, live fire)

  • Live Fire: Static targets only; no movement or dynamic shooting in this course.

  • Anyone who wants to build real-world shotgun competency, starting from the ground up

What You’ll Need

  • 12 or 20 gauge pump-action or semi-auto shotgun

  • 100 rounds of birdshot (#7.5 or #8)

  • 5 on-body shotgun shells (side saddle, belt, or carrier)

  • Eye and ear protection

  • Brimmed hat

  • Sunblock

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (long sleeves recommended)

  • Water, snacks, notebook, pen

  • Personal IFAK or tourniquet (optional, but encouraged)

Safety & Conduct Policy

Safety is non-negotiable.
All students must demonstrate safe, competent gun handling at all times.
Any student displaying careless or negligent behavior will be immediately removed from the course with no refund.

Rescheduling Policy

  • No refunds for this course.

  • Students may reschedule with at least 48 hours’ notice, up to two times within 6 months of the original registration.

  • After that, a new registration is required.
